“Dętka” Sewer Museum
“Dętka” is a sewer beneath Liberty Square (Plac Wolności), built in 1926, when construction of Łódź’s sewer system was just beginning. Its Polish name means “tube” or “inner tube” and is a reference to its shape. The sewer was in fact a rainwater collector. During rains, runoff water would be collected within it and could then be released whenever one of the nearby wastewater sewers needed cleaning. In 2008, it became the first historic site of its kind to be opened to visitors.
