The exhibition “Łodzianki Inicjatorki” (Women of Łódź – Initiators) is the first such comprehensive presentation of women associated with our city. It will introduce you to the herstories of women whose innovative actions have impacted the development of Łódź throughout its history.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary and as part of the celebrations of the Year of Łódź Women Initiators, the Museum of the City of Łódź aims to restore these women to their rightful place in our collective memory. They paved the way for future generations, demanding space for women in a world predominantly reserved for men. In doing so, they had to overcome numerous barriers, including stereotypes and legal restrictions.
Some of the heroines of the exhibition were born in Łódź and were associated with it throughout their lives. Others came from different places, bringing their unique knowledge and experiences with them. Over time, many chose to leave Łódź – some for personal reasons, others due to historical turmoil. Regardless of whether they lived here all their lives or only for a few years, their contributions helped shape our city.
The exhibition tells the stories of more than 120 women from Łódź. The narratives are arranged in chronological order and grouped according to time periods that reflect the political changes that shaped women’s circumstances. We tell their stories through objects, documents, and works of art –the majority of which come from the collections of the Museum of the City of Łódź – and through biographical profiles highlighting their most significant achievements.
The exhibition does not exhaust the list of heroines. We invite visitors to explore the roles of women throughout the city’s history, to reflect on memory, and to consider what has been left unsaid. We aim to inspire people to seek out and discover remarkable, active women from Łódź, both from the past and in the present day.
